Rinvenuto in un locale secondario della parrocchiale di Pieve di Teco (Imperia), il dipinto, trascurato dalle fonti, è identificabile come pala dell’altar maggiore della locale chiesa degli Agostiniani “battistini”, un edificio d’impianto tardo-medievale che versa oggi in stato di completo abbandono.      I confronti attuati all’interno del catalogo di Gregorio suggeriscono di collocare la realizzazione della tela nei primi anni del Settecento: dal punto di vista compositivo essa ripropone formule ormai ben sperimentate, ma documenta  al tempo stesso una relativa attenuazione del vorticoso cromatismo ancora tanto evidente nella produzione tardo-seicentesca dell’artista. Un accurato intervento di restauro, del quale si fornisce relazione, ha riportato l’opera a condizioni di piena fruibilità.

An altarpiece of Gregorio de Ferrari for the church of the Augustinians at Pieve di Teco

Found in an annex of the parish church of Pieve di Teco (Imperia), the painting, ignored by the sources, is identifiable as an altarpiece for the high altar of the local church of the Augustinian Order, a late–medieval building, now in a state of complete abandonment.
Comparisons of the altarpiece with other works in the catalogue of Gregorio de Ferrari suggest that the altarpiece shouldt be dated to the early years of the eighteenth century. From a compositional point of view, it re–proposes well–tried formulae, but at the same time it testifies to a comparative attenuation of the chromatic richness and swirling late–baroque licence still evident in the artist’s late–seicento output.
The painting, of high artistical importance within the Genoese Baroque, has now been meticulously restored and returned to a condition of easy legibility: a report on the restoration is furnished at the end of the script.
