Attraverso i documenti ritrovati, è possibile indicare gli interventi di restauro ai dipinti murali della Galleria delle Carte Geografiche eseguiti negli anni 1727 – 1728, mentre fino ad ora si conoscevano solo i restauri intrapresi sotto papa Barberini e quelli dell’Ottocento.
Gli autori di questi interventi settecenteschi sono Carlo Roncalli , pittore di Casa Albani (impiegato soprattutto come decoratore a Urbino e a Roma), ed Emanuele Alfani.
Gli interventi riguardarono sia il rifacimento del colore di molti sfondi, che il restauro di diverse figurine, grottesche ed altri elementi decorativi .
L’autore accenna inoltre ai restauri svolti sempre in quegli anni da Carlo Roncalli sugli affreschi di un altro edificio presente in Vaticano: la chiesa della Guardia Svizzera (Santi Martino e Sebastiano), i cui affreschi, opera del pittore cinquecentesco Giulio Mazzoni, sono attualmente staccati e conservati nei depositi dei Musei Vaticani.
Carlo Roncalli, “painter of the Casa Albani”, and Emanuele Alfani in the restoration of the Galleria delle Carte Geografiche in the Vatican
Rediscovered documents show that the mural paintings in the Galleria delle Carte Geografiche in the Papal Palace at the Vatican were restored in 1727–1728; only the restoration undertaken under the Barberini Pope Urban VIII, and those in the nineteenth century, had hitherto been documented.
The artists responsible for this eighteenth–century restoration were Carlo Roncalli, painter to the Albani family (especially employed as a decorator in Urbino and Rome), and Emanuele Alfani.
The interventions included both the renovation of the colour of many of the backgrounds, and the restoration of various small figures, grottesche and other decorative elements.
The author also mentions the restoration conducted in the same years by Carlo Roncalli on the frescoes of another building in the Vatican: the church of the Swiss Guards (Santi Martino e Sebastiano); its frescoes by the sixteenth–century master Giulio Mazzoni have now been detached and are in conservation in the storerooms of the Vatican Museums.
