Questo testo, a firma del grande Giovanni Pugliese Carratelli, apre una nuova rubrica dal titolo La memoria della storia, dedicata in questo caso alla figura e alle opere dell’epigrafista vittima della follia nazista. Pugliese ripercorre con simpatia e rimpianto le vicende di studio (e di amicizia) che lo legarono all’allora giovane Segre dall’estate del 1937 a Rodi fino all’aprile del 1944, quando egli fu catturato a Roma con la moglie e il figlioletto di pochi anni e consegnato ai tedeschi che li avviarono ai campi di sterminio, senza che neppure il sollecito intervento della Pontificia Segreteria di Stato, avvisata da alcuni amici, potè salvarli. Nel commosso ricordo dello studioso, se ne ricordano la formazione di storico e filologo, autodidatta dell’epigrafia greca, nella quale riuscì ad acquisire una competenza particolare, soprattutto per i documenti dell’età ellenistica, di cui testimoniano le opere uscite postume, tutte o quasi per la cura attenta e autorevole dello stesso Pugliese Carratelli.

Memoir of Mario Segre (Turin 1904–Auschwitz 1944)

This text, signed by the great Giovanni Pugliese Carratelli, opens a new series with the title La memoria della storia, dedicated in this case to the life and work of the distinguished epigraphist and victim of the Nazi madness, Mario Segre.
Pugliese traces with affection and sorrow the bonds of shared study (and friendship) that brought him close to the young Segre from the summer of 1937 in Rhodes to April 1944 in Rome. That was when Segre was captured with his wife and young son and handed over to the Germans, who sent them to the death camps. Not even the prompt intervention of the Pontifical Secretariat of State, advised on their fate by some friends, could save them.
Carratelli’s moving memoir recalls Segre’s training as a historian and philologist. It tells how he taught himself Greek epigraphy. This was a field in which he succeeded in acquiring particular expertise, especially for documents of the Hellenistic age, testified by his posthumously published works, all or almost all edited with meticulous and authoritative care by Pugliese Carratelli himself.
