Il contributo traccia innanzitutto una breve cronistoria delle analisi sui manoscritti miniati e delle ricerche sulle fonti antiche svolte a partire dal XIX secolo. Vengono poi indicate le metodiche analitiche utilizzate ai giorni nostri. I risultati ottenuti durante le recenti indagini effettuate dai gruppi di ricerca guidati da Pietro Baraldi, Claudio Seccaroni e Maria Perla Colombini vengono messi a confronto con le indicazioni fornite delle fonti scritte antiche e con simili analisi recenti svolte su altri codici medievali e rinascimentali di ambito italiano. Tali confronti riguardano tutti i componenti delle miniature, ossia pigmenti, coloranti, leganti e vernici.

From the sources to the analyses: remarks on the results of the scientific investigations conducted on the Bible of Borso d’Este

The article first provides a brief chronological overview of the analyses conducted on illuminated manuscripts and research on the early sources since the nineteenth century. The analytical methods used in our time are then described. The results obtained during the recent investigations on the Bible of Borso d’Este carried out by the research teams led by Pietro Baraldi, Claudio Seccaroni and Maria Perla Colombini are then compared with the indications furnished by the early written sources and with similar analyses conducted in recent times on other medieval and Renaissance manuscripts in Italy. These comparisons comprise all the components of miniatures, namely pigments, colouring matter, binders and varnishes.
