Estratto dal volume speciale: Scultura lignea. Per una storia dei sistemi costruttivi e decorativi dal Medioevo al XIX secolo

Questo articolo analizza nella prima parte un gruppo di statue lignee medievali (secoli XII-XIV) conservate in località sul versante orientale della Maiella, alcune delle quali inedite, e cerca di operare una contestualizzazione dei pezzi che non si limiti alla cronologia o alle declinazioni stilistiche ma che prenda in esame anche il vissuto dell’opera e soprattutto le interazioni tra il suo aspetto e il culto che vi si è sedimentato, come ad esempio nel caso della Madonna di Palombaro giunge a determinare anche la struttura interna dell’opera.
Nelle pagine conclusive invece, partendo da questo microcaso regionale, si è cercato di cogliere alcune analogie tra le peculiari modalità cultuali riservate alle statue lignee in età antica e quelle rivolte alla medesima tipologia di manufatti nel corso del medioevo.

                                                 The Madonnas of Maiella: structure and religious customs

The first part of this article analyses a group of medieval wood statues (12th to 14th centuries) still to be found in their original settings on the eastern face of the Maiella mountain massif, some of which have never been published, and seeks to contextualize the pieces, not just chronologically or in terms of their stylistic evolution, but also by looking at the life of the work and especially the interaction between its aspect and the cult that has grown up around it, which, for example in the case of the Madonna of Palombara, determined also the internal structure of the work. Instead, in the final pages, starting from this very particular regional case, we have tried to find some analogies from among the peculiar religious forms accorded wood statues in ancient times versus those accorded to the same kind of artefact during the course of the Middle Ages.
