Il recente restauro della statua di Santa Bibiana di Gian Lorenzo Bernini è stato l’occasione di uno studio intrapreso su più fronti. Alcune anomalie nell’assetto dell’opera, la presenza di un corposo rifacimento in malta, l’analisi della tecnica esecutiva, hanno fatto ipotizzare che il gruppo scultoreo avesse subito una indebita rotazione. Lo studio delle vicende conservative ha confermato che la scultura era stata smontata nel XVIII secolo per l’esecuzione di un calco. Dopo il recente restauro l’opera è stata ricollocata sull’altare nella posizione corretta riprendendo il giusto significato architettonico e luministico.

Restoration and more, the revelation of other unexpected aspects

The recent restoration of Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s Saint Bibian provided a chance to study the work from more than one angle. During the restoration certain anomalies came to light. These included the way the statue had been positioned and the existence of an abundant restoration in plaster of Paris. The technique used to sculpt the piece was also examined. These factors pointed to the fact that the statue had been unnecessarily rotated. Documentation of the statue’s restoration unveiled its dismantlement in the eighteenth century for a plaster cast to be made. Following restoration the piece was put back in its originally intended position, bringing back to life the architectural significance of the niche and the statue’s correct illumination.
