Critical notes on lucky breaks and the restoration of the statue

The recent restoration of Bernini’s
Saint Bibian has proved vital to a critical interpretation and understanding of the work within its intended context. Important information has emerged from the archival research and historic fonts. These document the various times the statue has been moved over the years and its previous restorations. They also tell of how a mother mould was made in the eighteenth century so as to be able to make plaster casts of the statue. It came to light that the statue’s position in the niche differed from Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s intended one. This had been hindering a full appreciation of the work, originally intended as only a part of a whole.
