Reflections on Archaeological Restoration

The article discusses the relationship between the restoration of archaeological objects and that of “works of art” based on Cesare Brandi’s theory of restoration. The key concepts expressed by Brandi are analyzed with regard to the value to be assigned to “aesthetic significance” and “historical significance”.
The latter is present also in objects that are in a state of ruin, though Brandi did not consider restoration of these justified. And yet, historical significance assumes strategic importance in the knowledge of ancient cultures. Finally, the article discusses the relationship between art historians and archaeologists with regard to the management of restoration activities in Italy.
